A Brief History of Star, Palm & Hibiscus Islands

The story of Star, Palm, and Hibiscus Islands is deeply intertwined with the rich history of Miami and Miami Beach. These man-made islands, now known for their exclusivity and tranquil beauty, emerged from the waters of Biscayne Bay in 1922, crafted by the Army Corps of Engineers. Originally envisioned as a luxurious retreat, they quickly became a magnet for the elite of the early 20th century.

Palm Island, the first of the trio, gained immediate notoriety as a winter haven for none other than the infamous gangster Al Capone. Capone's presence added a layer of intrigue and glamour to the island's history, making it a popular topic in the gossip columns of the time.

In the same year, the Palm Island Club opened its doors, defiantly serving alcohol during the Prohibition era. The club became a symbol of the rebellious and decadent spirit of the 1920s, attracting celebrities and socialites. Its allure was undeniable, drawing visitors who wanted to escape

the stringent regulations of the mainland. The Palm Island Club's legacy continued into the late 1930s when it was revived by New York club magnate Lou Walters. Walters, the father of future television icon Barbara Walters, rebranded the establishment as the Latin Quarter in 1939. This luxury nightclub quickly became one of the most famous entertainment venues in the country.

The Latin Quarter hosted a galaxy of stars, including Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Sophie Tucker, and Milton Berle. These performances cemented the islands' reputation as a hotspot for entertainment and high society. The era was characterized by wild nights and glamorous gatherings, making the islands a focal point of Miami's social scene. The vibrant nightlife and celebrity allure began to wane by the 1960s, as the islands transitioned into a more subdued and exclusive residential community. Today, Star, Palm, and Hibiscus Islands are known for their serenity and security, offering a stark contrast to their lively past. These islands, nestled between the bustling cities of Miami and Miami Beach, have become a sanctuary for those seeking a peaceful and secure environment. The transformation from a party-centric destination to a tranquil residential enclave has been remarkable. The islands now attract families and retirees who appreciate the beauty and privacy they offer. While the islands have quieted down considerably from their roaring past, they still retain a touch of glamour. Today, many celebrities call these islands home, drawn by the exclusivity, luxury, and breathtaking views. Among the notable residents have been Gloria Estefan, Shaquille O'Neal, and Rosie O'Donnell. The presence of modern stars ensures that Star, Palm, and Hibiscus Islands continue to be places of intrigue and fascination.
